Culture:
- Sponsored a Puerto Rican theater company dedicated to presenting classic plays or their original adaptation at historic venues at moderate prices (e.g. Medea amurallada, El laberinto de Zeus). Specifically, provided backing for the Integration Project, which offers a selected group of high school seniors the opportunity to work as part of the stage crew of a production.
Inclusiveness:
- Supported a women's theater company's educational project through a donation managed by Sociedad Mexicana Pro Derechos de la Mujer (Semillas), in order to present in seven states of the Republic of Mexico the theater-workshop Los monólogos de la maquila, a play about the working conditions of the females workers who sew and dye jeans and the impact of this fashion on female workers and the general public.
- Supported an organization committed to the holistic human development of female heads of household who live below the poverty line or who are survivors of domestic violence. Its main programs are: economic development, transitory housing, business incubator, and micro-credit.
- Supported an activist organization in the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, in the preparation of a submission for a license to establish a community radio station.
Special Programs:
-
Developed and operated a project in Cuba, funded by the Ford Foundation, to deliver fundraising and audience development workshops to cultural organizations, and to produce a video and work book.
-
Established in Puerto Rico, the “Solidarity Award… honoring those who bring us together.” This annual initiative seeks to strengthen the bridge building capabilities of community based organizations as well as to recognize their exemplary work in bringing people and groups together for the common good.
